There are three types of baptisms in the Bible:

John the Baptist’s baptism for repentance, Jesus’ baptism from John the Baptist, and the water baptism received by believers.

1. Jesus’ Baptism from John the Baptist

First, the baptism that Jesus was baptized with from John the Baptist in the Jordan River was, just as sins were imputed to sacrificial offerings through laying on of hands in the Old Testament, a baptism He was baptized with as the Lamb of God to have all the sins of humanity imputed to Him. This was the beginning of God’s just plan of salvation, and through baptism, Jesus took upon Himself all the sins of the world in a just manner through imputation.

‘But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”’ (Matthew 3:15–17)
“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6)

2. John the Baptist’s baptism for repentance

And there is John the Baptist’s baptism of repentance that he performed for the people, which was a baptism to turn people who were in their sins toward Jesus.

3. Believers’ Water Baptism

The water baptism we receive is an outward confession of our faith in Jesus’ baptism, death on the cross, and resurrection. This water baptism itself is not a condition for salvation.

Therefore, true salvation comes from faith in believing in the removal of sin through Jesus’ baptism.

If we do not believe in Jesus’ baptism and do not know this truth, we cannot have all our sins imputed to Him, and as a result, His death on the cross and resurrection become irrelevant to us. True salvation comes from faith in believing in the removal of sin through Jesus’ baptism. Those who believe in Jesus’ baptism are united with Him through faith and are baptized, and by dying and rising together from sin, are born again anew as God’s holy children.

Pastor Paul C. Jong of The New Life Mission’s book ‘Have You Truly Been Born Again of Water and the Spirit?’ by conveying in detail the true meaning of Jesus’ baptism through both Old and New Testament scriptures, helps readers to be born again as God’s holy children through faith.
